Wildcat Wednesday has become a new tradition at South Poplar Traditional Elementary school, fostering a sense of community and belonging among students, staff, and parents. This monthly assembly, centred around celebrating achievements, inclusivity, and the school's collective spirit, draws attention to its innovative approach to expanding school culture.

Last week, the Abbotsford School District became a place full of fun and colour as students, teachers, and families celebrated the Lunar New Year. From school assemblies to dragon parades, art projects and classroom activities, many schools throughout the system learned about this culturally significant event and what the Year of the Dragon means.

In classrooms, the learning took a hands-on approach. Students delved into the rich tapestry of Lunar New Year customs, crafting lanterns and exploring the zodiac animals, communicating their wishes and aspirations for the coming year.

The Abbotsford Board of Education has a new governance leader. Trustee Shirley Wilson was elected as Chair at last night's public meeting of the Board. Wilson was first elected to the Board of Education in 2005. She succeeds Trustee Korky Neufeld, who stepped aside following his recent announcement to run in upcoming provincial elections. Trustee Preet Rai will continue as Vice-Chair.

Korky Neufeld, the current Chair of the Abbotsford Board of Education, has advised his colleagues that he will be stepping aside from the top governance role, effective January 31, 2024. This leadership transition follows Neufeld's recent declaration to run for the Conservative Party of British Columbia in the Abbotsford West Riding in the upcoming Provincial election cycle.

In an inspiring display of creativity and talent, Yale Secondary School's Art Department recently hosted a remarkable art show, showcasing the best student artwork from the first semester. The event, held on January 24, 2024, featured an array of stunning pieces from visual arts students in Grades 9 to 12.

The Agriculture Program at Barrowtown Elementary in Abbotsford, BC, is flourishing, thanks to the President’s Choice Children’s Charity’s Power Full Kids | Grow & Cook program. The program aims to help educators incorporate food-based education into their lesson plans by providing students with tools and classroom resources.

The Abbotsford Board of Education is currently seeking feedback from families, employees, students and the larger community on the proposed school calendars for the next three years - 2024-2025 school year, 2025-2026 school year and 2026-2027 school year. Feedback will be collected via the school district's Engagement Portal until February 9, 2024.
